In the Netherlands, there is a folk tale about an indecisive girl and tulips. Three great knights wanted to marry the girl, and each one brought a gift. The first knight placed a crown on her head, and promised to treat her like a queen. The next night immediately laid his sword beside her and swore he would protect her. Finally, the third knight put a bag of gold at her feet and said, “Marry me, and you will be wealthy beyond your dreams!”
The girl did not know how to choose, so she asked a fairy for help. The fairy looked at the girl seated among her gifts. “I will help you, and you will never have to make a decision again,” the fairy said.
The fairy turned the girl into a tulip, with the crown as the petals of the flower, the sword as the leaves, and the bag of gold as the tulip bulb. Just as the fairy had promised, the girl never had to decide on anything again.
