What is Taiwan like in the eyes of a foreigner? In the eyes of Tanaka Ayako, a Japanese girl, Taiwan is a very friendly place. Ayako came to Taiwan to study Chinese. Because of language and cultural differences, she has many interesting stories to tell about her life in Taiwan. She has collected these stories in a comic book called Popo's Taiwan Diary.
In this book, Ayako turns herself into a cat named Popo. All the stories are presented through cute drawings of the cat. These include funny stories of misunderstandings between Popo and her classmates. In other stories, Popo tries to win the Tungyi Lottery by paying for items separately to collect more receipts. There are also unhappy stories, such as Popo being flooded by water during a typhoon.
Tanaka Ayako wishes to explain that getting information from the media isn't always enough. There are many interesting things that we can only experience first-hand. Being in touch with another language and culture may not only show you a different world, it may also show you a different side of yourself!
